The City of Camden values the input and contributions of its citizenry.  One way the City engages civic participation is through boards and commissions. Through engaged citizens, the City is able to utilize their strengths in areas of respective passions to provide guidance and input into matters that affect the quality of life for all Camden residents and visitors.

Planning Commission

The Planning Commission seeks to guide and accomplish a coordinated and harmonious development of the City of Camden in accordance with existing and future needs, best promote the efficiency and economy in the process of development. The Planning Commission’s responsibilities include: prepare and revise periodically a comprehensive plan for the City, prepare and recommend to City Council ordinances promoting orderly development in accordance with the comprehensive plan, administer the City Zoning Ordinance, Chapter 157, and review and recommend needed changes in ordinance and map of the City, to advise, and where appropriate to assist, the Building Inspector of the City as to interpretation, administration and enforcement by him of Chapter 156 and 157 of the Code of Ordinances, to hear and recommend to the City Council all requests for changes in zoning boundaries and requests for relief from zoning requirements, and to recommend to the City Council changes, additions, or deletions to the Zoning Code and map and new ordinances pertaining to zoning as it appears advisable.

Board of Construction Appeals

The Board of Construction Appeals addresses and resolves matters occurring under the Fire Prevention Code, the Building Code, the Electrical Code, and the Plumbing Code.

Board of Zoning Appeals

The Board of Zoning Appeals hears and decides appeals where it is alleged there is error in any order, requirement, decision, or determination made by the Zoning Administrator. This Board also has the authority to grant variances if certain conditions are met.

Municipal Election Commission

The Municipal Election Commission is responsible for conducting all Camden municipal elections held under Title 5, Chapter 15 of the Code of Laws of S.C.

Parks and Trees Commission

The Parks and Trees Commission assists in the Arbor Day ceremony, provides recommendations for park improvements, conducts periodic review and recommendations for revision to the public tree care ordinance, and advises tree and plant issues within the parks, publicly owned property and rights-of-way within the city.

Camden/Kershaw Clean Community Commission

The Camden/Kershaw Clean Community Commission studies litter control problems in the county and the city and makes recommendations to the governmental bodies based on the studies. The Commission stresses beautification and through community networking, encourages litter control support and responsible stewardship.

Price House Commission

The Price House Commission develops and executes plans for the restoration of the Price House and surrounding grounds in addition to supervising the operation and maintenance.

Camden Historic Landmarks Commission

The Camden Historic Landmarks Commission insures historic properties are in harmony with the architectural and historical character of the city. The Commission reviews plans and applications for all construction to historic properties, including modifications to existing properties, demolitions, and construction of new buildings. The Commission has the power to approve, approve with modifications, or deny approval of applications in accordance with the prescribed procedures and guidelines.
