Camden Chat & Chew: Vietnam and South Carolina

For eight years the American public was transfixed by the Vietnam War. From 1965 to 1973 US combat troops led a campaign against North Vietnam and Viet Cong insurgents into South Vietnam in an attempt to prevent the North from integrating the South into a united Vietnam under communist government. In the end the American troops withdrew and the South was overrun by the North Vietnam troops two years later. In Fritz Hamer’s presentation he will focus on the American soldiers, the conditions they faced in fighting a war in an alien environment and the life the soldier led, whether on the battle field or as logistical support. In describing this war Hamer will include stories from South Carolinians who served there using portions of the seventy oral histories he has collected, especially with Camden natives and residents who served there.
