SUMMARY:The Duke Pitchforks
DESCRIPTION:The Arts Center of Kershaw County is proud to announce the return of The Pitchforks of Duke University to the Main Stage! \nFounded in 1979\, The Pitchforks are the oldest a cappella group at Duke University. They have sung the national anthem at Chicago Bulls and Duke Basketball games\, showcased themselves before the Queen of Jordan\, and even opened for Ben Folds in 2009 and The Band Perry in 2015. Through the generosity of Bob Sheheen\, we are thrilled to welcome them back to Wood Auditorium! \nIf you’ve never attended a prior performance by The Pitchforks\, you’ll soon discover the talent that has garnered the group such ongoing acclaim. Seven tracks have been featured on BOCA compilations since 1997\, and the group has twice won the CARA Award for Best Male Collegiate Album nationally with Bring It Back (2006) and Disconcert (2008). Their 2010 album\, All In\, was awarded runner-up for the same distinction and won Best Male Collegiate Song and Best Male Collegiate Arrangement with its hit single\, “Fireflies.” The Pitchforks’ most recent release\, Refraction (2012)\, another runner-up for Best Male Collegiate Album\, also scored a CARA Arrangement Award for its unique take on “Hallelujah.” \nWe look forward to seeing you there!

DESCRIPTION:You bring your lunch and we’ll provide the learning! \nJoin George H. McDaniel\, historian at SC Battleground Preservation Trust\, as he discusses the significance of Richard Lushington to Charleston and South Carolina’s history. He will explore Lushington’s Quakerism\, his connections to Jewish history through his unique militia unit\, and the world of Revolutionary Charles Town which brought them all together. \nMcDaniel will also detail the story of detective work which led him to Savannah where he located the long-lost portraits of Lushington and his wife Charity. Those portraits have now come home to Charleston and are on display at the Charleston Library Society just about 100 yards from the site of the Quaker Cemetery where Lushington was most likely buried.

DESCRIPTION:Homeschooling? Want to get out of the house for an educational field trip? Join our Homeschool Day with a new topic each month! \nOnce a month\, the Rev War Center will offer a free homeschool educational day where small school groups can come together and experience one of the educational programs offered by the Center. A minimum of ten students will be needed to host these educational programs\, if the minimum is not met then parents will be notified a week prior that the program will be canceled. \nFor parents with scholars of multiple ages\, don’t fret. Children 7 years old or under will be given a fun coloring and activity packet to complete off to the side so the whole family can enjoy the day. \nFebruary Program: Colonial Living into the Revolutionary War \nStudents will be given a colonial personality in which to view the events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The group will discuss the different taxes and events that led to America wanting to declare independence and end by asking\, should we sign the Declaration of Independence? Is it worth it?

DESCRIPTION:‘Because it was Right’ Come hear about the case prior to Brown v. Board of Education that occurred right here in South Carolina. \nMore than 100 parents and children signed Clarendon County petitions that led to Brown v. Board of Education and the end of legal segregation of public schools. The first petition\, asking that “separate but equal” actually be equal\, led to death threats\, a murder\, arson\, and loss of jobs and homes. But the petitioners persisted. Meet Harry and Eliza Briggs\, Levi and Hammett Pearson\, Louis and Mary Oliver\, Willie and Gardenia Stukes. \nClaudia Smith Brinson worked as a journalist for 33 years in Florida\, Greece\, and Columbia\, SC\, where she was a national columnist and writing coach for Knight-Ridder when the chain owned The State. Her reporting at The State won more than three dozen state and regional awards. The first person to win Knight Ridder’s Award of Excellence twice\, she was a member of the team whose Hurricane Hugo coverage was a Pulitzer finalist. She also served as an associate editor on The State editorial board. Her short fiction awards include the O. Henry. She was named an SC Woman of Achievement by the SC Commission on Women and an SC Journalist of the Year by the SC Press Association. From 2006-2016\, Brinson held the Harriet Gray Blackwell Endowed Professorship at Columbia College\, where she led the Writing for Print and Digital Media program. Her papers are included in the Archiving SC Women Project\, Dr. Mary Baskin Waters Collection\, at SC Political Collections\, USC. “Stories of Struggle: The Clash Over Civil Rights in South Carolina\,” published by USC Press\, is Brinson’s decades-long investigation into and collection of the personal stories of Black civil rights activists. Brinson interviewed more than 150 activists to tell true stories of white supremacy and civil rights in South Carolina from 1940-1969. \nThis program is sponsored by South Carolina Humanities\, a not-for-profit organization; inspiring\, engaging and enriching South Carolinians with programs on literature\, history\, culture\, and heritage.
