Your favorite small businesses in Camden and Kershaw County have added great items to this year’s Shop Small goodie bags\, which will be available to the first 150 shoppers who stop by Broad Street Park\, on the corner of Broad and Rutledge Streets in Downtown Camden between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm on Friday the 29th. \n“Plaid Friday” is an alternative to the commonly known “Black Friday” where independent business advocacy groups encourage their communities to bring back the time when shopping for friends and family was a pleasurable leisurely activity.  It is celebrated throughout the nation as part of the “Shop Indie Local” campaign. \nOn its 15th annual Small Business Saturday this November\, American Express will donate $1 for each purchase made with an eligible American Express card at qualifying small businesses across the US to expand its grant commitment to support small businesses impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The company founded Small Business Saturday in 2010\, coming out of the U.S. financial crisis\, to help drive consumer spending to small\, independently-owned merchants and restaurants during the critical holiday shopping season.

DESCRIPTION:Multiple community organizations will gather\, alongside community officials and student representatives from across Kershaw County\, to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s birthday during the 4th annual MLK Unity Day Celebration on Saturday\, Jan. 11\, 2025. \nThe celebration will kick off at 11 a.m. with a gathering at the African American Cultural Center of Camden\, located at 517 York St. Following the gathering\, attendees will proceed with a commemorative march at 11:30 a.m.\, ending at Camden City Hall\, 1000 Lyttleton St.\, where the celebration program will commence at noon. This year’s theme is “Moving Forward in Love and Unity.” \nThe event is organized each year by the Concerned Citizens of Kershaw County (CCKC)\, in partnership with the Camden-Kershaw County Branch of the NAACP\, Unity in the Community\, Concerned Clergy of Kershaw County\, the African American Cultural Center of Camden\, and the City of Camden. \n“This is a special day for us to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy\,” CCKC Chair Rev. Rosalind Watson said. “And we look forward to the year ahead of us\, reaffirming our commitment to make our community a better place for everyone to live.” \nProgram participants will feature student speakers\, the choruses of Blaney Elementary School and Camden Middle School\, and the Camden Military Academy Color Guard. \nAttendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for the program at City Hall.
