Soak in the names and the history.\nQuaker Cemetery was established in 1759 when Quakers\, early settlers in Camden\, were buried there. Near the musicians is a serene\, walled section for children from the Mayfield Children’s Home (now a private residence). Next to it is the Strangers Plot which gives unidentified people a beautiful resting place.\nVeterans from the late 1700s to present rest at Quaker Cemetery\, 713 Meeting Street in Camden. SUMMARY:The War Begins: The South Carolina Snow Campaign
DESCRIPTION:Join us on November 22 for a commemoration of the Snow Campaign of 1775.  Colonel Richard Richardson gathered patriot forces from across the Carolinas to march into the South Carolina backcountry to suppress those loyal to the King.  Known as the Snow Campaign due to the heavy snowfall the militia encountered that December\, this was the first major military operation in South Carolina. On December 22\, patriots won the Battle of the Great Cane Brake and quelled loyalists’ activities for three years. \nThe Revolutionary War Visitor Center hosts this 250th anniversary event. Our program features a teenager telling his mother why he is leaving home to fight for freedom and a dialogue between a patriot and a loyalist as they defend their choices to support the rebellion or remain loyal to King George III. Historian Durant Ashmore will interpret the participants\, routes\, and events of the Snow Campaign. Finally\, the audience will experience the campaign through the eyes and ears of Richard Richardson and Camden’s Joseph Kershaw. Afterwards\, Historic Camden’s Colonial Village will come alive with demonstrations of colonial life. \n

Members of the public planning to attend are encouraged to RSVP to Kat Spadacenta at 803-432-2421 x1153 or kspadacenta@camdensc.org. \nEach year\, the City of Camden plants a tree to honor or commemorate an individual\, group or organization. \nArbor Day began in Nebraska on April 10\, 1872\, when more than one million trees were planted as part of the celebration. In the U.S.\, Arbor Day is most commonly observed on the last Friday in April\, though some states have moved the date to coincide with the best tree planting weather. The City of Camden typically chooses a date in November to celebrate Arbor Day. \n
