DESCRIPTION:Irish Fest Camden returns for the eighth straight year\, culminating with the grand celebration on Saturday\, March 2\, 2024 at Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site.\nThe event is a non-profit entity with proceeds benefitting Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Camden. Nearly 200 members of the church and community annually volunteer their time to work the festival.\nA portion of the proceeds will also be distributed to various local non-profit entities.\nThroughout the week of the festival\, Camden businesses are invited to help join in the festivities by decorating their storefronts in an Irish theme. A committee will visit the locations with the winner receiving a unique award.\nHere is a listing of the week’s festivities:\n* Returning to the festivities is the Friday night Pub Crawl on Friday\, March 1. The evening is a night of live music at various venues in Camden from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. A complete list of participating venues and performers will be forthcoming.\n* One of the most popular events of the festival is the seventh annual Lucky Leprechaun 5K race/walk to be run at 8 a.m. on Saturday\, March 2 at the Town Green in Camden. Over 100 vendors will meet your retail therapy needs. Will a limb need to be amputated? What is the treatment for a fever and rash all over the body? Come be a physician’s apprentice for a day and learn all about 18th century medical practices and how far medicine has come since the American Revolution.

SUMMARY:Camden's Parlor Talk: Prof. Melissa Stuckey on Rosenwald Schools in SC
DESCRIPTION:Rosenwald Schools were built for African American students through a philanthropic partnership between Julius Rosenwald and Booker T. Washington. These schools were built throughout South Carolina as state-of-the-art educational facilities in the early 1900s (1912-1923). The schools provided education\, improved social mobility\, and vastly increased college attendance\, setting the stage for the civil rights movement. \nThere were nearly 500 Rosenwald schools built in South Carolina\, but due to development\, sprawl\, and neglect\, only 40 remain standing in various states of repair. \nJoin us as we host USC Professor Melissa Stuckey\, who will share the history and role that the Rosenwald schools played in South Carolina.

Come experience life on a working farm at Old McCaskill’s Farm’s 14th Annual Sheep Shearing Day presented by Connell Law Firm on Saturday\, March 23 from 10am – 5pm. \nSheep Shearing Day presented by Connell Law Firm is a family-friendly event where we have the opportunity to\nintroduce our community to the joys of nature and farm living. Enjoy live music and watch the professionals shear our\nsheep of their long winter wool using the oldest method of shearing. We’ll also have local knitters\, spinners\, weavers\,\nand felters showcasing how wool goes “from sheep to shawl”. \nSee a working sawmill in action\, watch a blacksmith at work\, and check out Border Collie demos. There are also\nhorseback rides and hay rides around the farm. \nVisitors can also check out our award-wining farm store and shop a wide selection of meats; jams\, jellies\, and picked\nvegetables; and wool products like blankets and scarves. We make\, grow\, and raise most of what we sell in the store. SUMMARY:Boykin Spaniel Society National Field Trial
DESCRIPTION:For decades now the BSS Nationals has been hosted in the spring. It runs rain or shine\, persevering no matter the obstacles. Boykin owners cannot be denied and 2024 will be our best year yet. We will return to Boykin SC for our 2024 National Championship. \nThe dates will be April 4th – April 7th in historic Boykin\, Rembert\, and Camden SC. Activities begin on Thursday with the arrival of the judges and volunteer workers. Handlers arriving Thursday may check in at the City Arena\, with Elaine Baker. \nIt is the annual “Knock the Dust Off” oyster roast and BBQ. This has been a fun event and is a terrific way to get you ready for the rest of the weekend. It is here that the weekend really starts\, and many old friends meet and enjoy the smoky goodness of BBQ and the salty brine of oysters along with a chilled glass of wine or beer. This year’s oyster roast will be hosted in the stunning rose gardens behind the Kershaw-Cornwallis house. \nAll field work begins on FRIDAY morning. We will again utilize staggered starting times for each stake\, with Novice beginning at 8:00 am\, followed by Puppy\, then Intermediate and finally Open. This will be an action-packed weekend with something for everyone in your family. \nThe BSS will be bringing back the Duck Dog Shootout this year! We will once again have the Trash Duck Challenge\, Hot Dog Retrieve\, Speed Dog\, Children’s Handling Stake and of course the ever-popular Natural Ability stake. A variety of vendors will be at the arena with many differing sporting dog accessories for sale. All the fun side games will be held in the Boykin community and open to all walkups. You may sign up for Natural Ability and the other fun stakes at the event.

A minimum of ten students will be needed to host these educational programs\, if the minimum is not met then parents will be notified a week prior that the program will be canceled. \nFor parents with scholars of multiple ages\, don’t fret. Children 7 years old or under will be given a fun coloring and activity packet to complete off to the side so the whole family can enjoy the day. \nMay: Archaeology & Forensics 101 \nUsing the example of Camden Burials (Battle of Camden archaeological dig)\, among others\, scholars will be taught the difference between what an archaeologist does\, a forensic anthropologist does\, and a historian does in their jobs\, and a broad overview about the process of an archaeological dig and what forensic analysis entails.
