DESCRIPTION:Come join the Wateree Hounds on Sunday\, November 12\, 2023 for an exciting day filled with thrilling polo matches\, fun activities\, vendors and great company! Gates open at 10am and the event will kick off at 12pm with a series of competitive polo matches. General admission tickets are required for all adults and children over 12 years. The Kirkwood Club is the VIP tent where you can enjoy a catered lunch by Lilfreds and signature cocktails throughout the day. Shuttle service is included with VIP tickets from the Steeplechase Museum parking lot to the Polo Field running from 10AM-6PM. Between matches\, there will be a halftime show featuring a parade of hounds\, best tail-gate contest\, best hat contest and a divot stomp. The event will conclude with the Hunter’s Trace Farm Hay and Feed Afterparty with live music by the Green Thieves of Charleston. Event is rain or shine! No refunds. But this year\, they want you out a day earlier\, as well! Join Amy Kinard\, director of the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce and Kat Spadacenta\, Main Street manager for the City of Camden\, for their annual Shop Small tradition on “Plaid Friday” November 23 from 11 am to 1 pm\, as they hand out Shop Small bags stuffed with goodies from local businesses to the first 150 people who arrive at Broad Street Park\, at the corner of Broad and Rutledge Streets in Downtown Camden. “Plaid Friday” is an alternative to the commonly known “Black Friday” where independent business advocacy groups encourage their communities to bring back the time when shopping for friends and family was a pleasurable leisurely activity.  It is celebrated throughout the nation as part of the “Shop Indie Local” campaign. As in years past\, Kinard and Spadacenta are pledging to spend a significant amount of their gift giving budgets this holiday season at businesses within Kershaw County\, and this year they are challenging the community to do the same.

The trail begins near the canoe rack. The trail is flat for most of the way\, with roots to step over. There are several places that are nice for fishing\, as well as a few places where you can easily hike down to take in the peaceful scenery around the creek\, too. \nWildlife lovers would enjoy bringing binoculars to watch for birds and other creatures\, especially when you are back in the more wooded part of the trail.

DESCRIPTION:All residents of Kershaw County are invited to join the third annual MLK Unity Celebration on Saturday\, January 13\, hosted in partnership by Concerned Citizens of Kershaw County\, the City of Camden\, the Camden-Kershaw County Branch of the NAACP\, Unity in the Community – Kershaw County\, SC and the Concerned Clergy. \nBeginning at 11 am to kick off the celebration\, the public is invited to join in a “pep rally” at the African American Cultural Center\, 517 York Street\, and proceed with a commemorative march stepping off at11:30 am to end at City Hall\, 1000 Lyttleton Street\, where the celebration program will commence at 12:00 Noon. This year’s theme is “Living the Dream: It Starts with Me – Spreading Hope\, Courage and Unity”. \nChairwoman of the Concerned Citizens\, Ms. Ann Davis\, exclaimed\, “I always look forward to our gathering on MLK Unity Day to honor Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. and his legacy. He was an outstanding leader who fought so long and so hard for the rights and dignity of all people. Our celebration does not only reflect our past\, but it gives us the opportunity to celebrate our future which includes our wonderful youth. It also reaffirms our commitment to make our communities and our country a better place to live for everyone.” \nProgram participants will feature students from the Kershaw County School District: Lugoff Elementary and Doby’s Mill Elementary Choruses\, Ayla J. Neely\, Joyce A. Edwards\, Jaden M. Hayes\, and Zaria T. Kelly (all of Camden High School)\, Little Miss. Addison B. Dixon (Seven Oaks Elementary School) and North Central High School JROTC. Other participants will include city and county leaders\, local pastors\, and community leadership.

DESCRIPTION:The Arts Center of Kershaw County is proud to announce the return of The Pitchforks of Duke University to the Main Stage! \nFounded in 1979\, The Pitchforks are the oldest a cappella group at Duke University. They have sung the national anthem at Chicago Bulls and Duke Basketball games\, showcased themselves before the Queen of Jordan\, and even opened for Ben Folds in 2009 and The Band Perry in 2015. Through the generosity of Bob Sheheen\, we are thrilled to welcome them back to Wood Auditorium! \nIf you’ve never attended a prior performance by The Pitchforks\, you’ll soon discover the talent that has garnered the group such ongoing acclaim. Seven tracks have been featured on BOCA compilations since 1997\, and the group has twice won the CARA Award for Best Male Collegiate Album nationally with Bring It Back (2006) and Disconcert (2008). Their 2010 album\, All In\, was awarded runner-up for the same distinction and won Best Male Collegiate Song and Best Male Collegiate Arrangement with its hit single\, “Fireflies.” The Pitchforks’ most recent release\, Refraction (2012)\, another runner-up for Best Male Collegiate Album\, also scored a CARA Arrangement Award for its unique take on “Hallelujah.” \nWe look forward to seeing you there!

McDaniel\, historian at SC Battleground Preservation Trust\, as he discusses the significance of Richard Lushington to Charleston and South Carolina’s history. He will explore Lushington’s Quakerism\, his connections to Jewish history through his unique militia unit\, and the world of Revolutionary Charles Town which brought them all together. \nMcDaniel will also detail the story of detective work which led him to Savannah where he located the long-lost portraits of Lushington and his wife Charity. Those portraits have now come home to Charleston and are on display at the Charleston Library Society just about 100 yards from the site of the Quaker Cemetery where Lushington was most likely buried.

Join our Homeschool Day with a new topic each month! \nOnce a month\, the Rev War Center will offer a free homeschool educational day where small school groups can come together and experience one of the educational programs offered by the Center. A minimum of ten students will be needed to host these educational programs\, if the minimum is not met then parents will be notified a week prior that the program will be canceled. \nFor parents with scholars of multiple ages\, don’t fret. Children 7 years old or under will be given a fun coloring and activity packet to complete off to the side so the whole family can enjoy the day. \nFebruary Program: Colonial Living into the Revolutionary War \nStudents will be given a colonial personality in which to view the events leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The group will discuss the different taxes and events that led to America wanting to declare independence and end by asking\, should we sign the Declaration of Independence? Is it worth it?

DESCRIPTION:‘Because it was Right’ Come hear about the case prior to Brown v. Board of Education that occurred right here in South Carolina. \nMore than 100 parents and children signed Clarendon County petitions that led to Brown v. Board of Education and the end of legal segregation of public schools. The first petition\, asking that “separate but equal” actually be equal\, led to death threats\, a murder\, arson\, and loss of jobs and homes. But the petitioners persisted. Meet Harry and Eliza Briggs\, Levi and Hammett Pearson\, Louis and Mary Oliver\, Willie and Gardenia Stukes. \nClaudia Smith Brinson worked as a journalist for 33 years in Florida\, Greece\, and Columbia\, SC\, where she was a national columnist and writing coach for Knight-Ridder when the chain owned The State. Her reporting at The State won more than three dozen state and regional awards. The first person to win Knight Ridder’s Award of Excellence twice\, she was a member of the team whose Hurricane Hugo coverage was a Pulitzer finalist. She also served as an associate editor on The State editorial board. Her short fiction awards include the O. Henry. She was named an SC Woman of Achievement by the SC Commission on Women and an SC Journalist of the Year by the SC Press Association. From 2006-2016\, Brinson held the Harriet Gray Blackwell Endowed Professorship at Columbia College\, where she led the Writing for Print and Digital Media program. Her papers are included in the Archiving SC Women Project\, Dr. Mary Baskin Waters Collection\, at SC Political Collections\, USC. “Stories of Struggle: The Clash Over Civil Rights in South Carolina\,” published by USC Press\, is Brinson’s decades-long investigation into and collection of the personal stories of Black civil rights activists. Brinson interviewed more than 150 activists to tell true stories of white supremacy and civil rights in South Carolina from 1940-1969. \nThis program is sponsored by South Carolina Humanities\, a not-for-profit organization; inspiring\, engaging and enriching South Carolinians with programs on literature\, history\, culture\, and heritage.

DESCRIPTION:Irish Fest Camden returns for the eighth straight year\, culminating with the grand celebration on Saturday\, March 2\, 2024 at Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site.\nThe event is a non-profit entity with proceeds benefitting Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Camden. Nearly 200 members of the church and community annually volunteer their time to work the festival.\nA portion of the proceeds will also be distributed to various local non-profit entities.\nThroughout the week of the festival\, Camden businesses are invited to help join in the festivities by decorating their storefronts in an Irish theme. A committee will visit the locations with the winner receiving a unique award.\nHere is a listing of the week’s festivities:\n* Returning to the festivities is the Friday night Pub Crawl on Friday\, March 1. The evening is a night of live music at various venues in Camden from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. A complete list of participating venues and performers will be forthcoming.\n* One of the most popular events of the festival is the seventh annual Lucky Leprechaun 5K race/walk to be run at 8 a.m. on Saturday\, March 2 at the Town Green in Camden. Registration is currently taking place online at: runsignup.com/Race/SC/Camden/LuckyLeprechaunSC5K.\n* The week of festivities leads up to the grand celebration at Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site. The Highland Games\, a staple of the festival since its start\, brings together athletes from throughout the Southeast to compete in such events as the open stone throw\, the Braemer Stone throw\, the Sheaf and the light and heavy hammer toss have piqued the interest of festival-goers\, many of whom are getting their first look at these unique athletic events.\nExperience live Celtic music on three stages\, featuring headliner Syr\, a Celtic folk rock band from Columbia\, SC.  Enjoy other international artists from Ireland and Canada\, Irish dancing\, bagpipes and drums.\nKids will have a blast in the two-acre Kids Zone with inflatables\, face painting\, and the craft tent. Over 100 vendors will meet your retail therapy needs. Adults and children alike will enjoy the majestic Irish Gypsy Vanner horses and the Irish Wolfhounds’ “Kiss Me I’m Irish” booth.\nIndulge in delicious festival treats from more than 40 vendors in the food truck arena. Wet your whistle at the Irish whiskey tasting tent or with a variety of Irish brews or green beer. Enjoy the Irish Pub tent serving up hot shepherd’s pie and live pub music.\nFor the second straight year\, hurling teams — the national sport of Ireland — from throughout the southeast will gather in Camden to compete for the Irish Fest Camden Cup.\nAdmission into the main event it $20 for adults and $8 for children ages two through 12 and free for infants a year old and younger.
