Join in the celebration of the richness of African American culture and history. \nJuneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Today\, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It’s a time for reflection and rejoicing. A time for assessment\, self-improvement\, and planning for the future. Although freedom continues to be challenged\, we are committed to striving for justice for all. \nAttendees are encouraged to bring their personal lawn chairs. There is no cost for any food or beverages being served. Enjoy a hot dog or perhaps some fried fish and fries\, all free of charge. \nThe Liberty Stage at Camden City Arena will showcase various artists and community leaders offering cultural expressions to celebrate the 5th Annual Juneteenth Celebration. There will be music for all – gospel\, rap\, and everything in between – allowing us to dance in celebration of our greatness. Poets and dancers will also take the stage\, and special guests\, including the first Black mayor of Camden and other community leaders and activists\, will lift their voices in unity. \nDon’t miss the Empowerment Stroll\, where various vendors will provide valuable information to improve the quality of life for our citizens. Though the colonists were defeated (spoiler)\, it did not dishearten them\, instead it encouraged them to keep fighting against the better trained\, better equipped British army because the cause was worthy.

For several slaves in Camden it was supposed to be a chance to declare their freedom as well. Unfortunately\, they were betrayed by one of their own and stopped days prior to the July 4th celebrations.  \nThe Camden Slave Conspiracy of 1816 was stopped before it could become a revolt\, but the arrests and punishments of the conspirators had long lasting effects not only on the enslaved people of Kershaw County\, but throughout South Carolina as well. DESCRIPTION:Join in the annual parade\, this year celebrating Carolina Day!\nKids are invited to show off their patriotic spirit\, decorating bicycles\, scooters\, and wagons and wearing their red\, white\, and blue for the 9th Annual Kids’ 4th of July Parade on Saturday\, June 28 in Downtown Camden.\nFestivities begin at Camden City Hall at 10 a.m.; the parade starts at 10:30 am. This is a free event open to the community.\nPre-parade activities on City Hall front lawn in partnership with community organizations such as the Camden Fire Department\, Revolutionary War Visitor Center\, Hobkirk Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution\, Col. Joseph Kershaw Chapter of the South Carolina Society Sons of the American Revolution\, Camden Junior Welfare League\, and more. Free snow cones will be available to all participants following the parade.\nFor the safety of the participants\, motorized vehicles (electric or gas powered) are not allowed\, and children 10 and under must be escorted by an adult.
